Chapter 8

It felt good to be in a beautiful home with Ty. The move was smooth. Ty paid for everything like he said he would. What would I do now? Play housewife? I didn’t know anyone there. My plans were to enroll in college, so I planned to just do that and concentrate on studying. One thing I knew I had to do was call Zette. Even though I would hear her mouth off, she had to know what was up with me. That was a promise we made years ago.

“What’s up, Sis?”

“EJ? Boy, where you been?”

“I’m in California now.”

“Who you visiting down there?”

“I’m not visiting, I moved down here.”

“You what!”

“I just moved down here yesterday.”

“Wait a minute. You moved to California like that? It must be some nigga you chasin' up after.”

“Well . . .I did move in with a nigga if you have to put it like that. His name is Ty.”

“Where did you meet him at?”

“Up there. I went to a trade party last week and I rode down here with him and his buddies.”

“Oh shit! EJ, I can’t believe you did that.”

“Why? Everything is going well. He is cool and we like each other. He said I don’t have to work, that I should just finish school, so that’s what I’m going to do”

“What do you have to give up for that? Screwin' all his homies! You know about trade. You just got out of a mess with Antoine and now you’re settin' yourself up to be hurt again.”

“If it doesn’t work, I’ll just come on home, Zette. It’s no big deal.”

“Alright then, but it’s more than just packing up and coming home. I don’t want you to get hurt. What does he do anyway? Deal drugs and perpetrate about havin' this and that business? An undercover detail shop or somthin'?”

“No. He is a talent scout for a record label down here, so he travels a lot. He has a bomb-ass home and cars.”

“Have you ever thought that it may be drug money?”

“Yeah, I have. I got my eyes open and I know you got my back.”

“Not when you locked up for some nigga.”

“Just don’t tell Mom. I told her I moved down here to go to school, which is still true.”

“At least give me the address where you’re at. And the phone number.”

“Hey girl, I gotta go. Ty is callin me.”

There was a sigh in her voice. I could tell Zette did not want to get off the phone. She was genuinely concerned about me. Or was just worried about the fact that I’m jumping at his every call.

“Fine. But take care of yourself. If you need anything, call me.”

“I will.”

“I mean it, boy.”

“Bye, Mom.” I knew she didn’t like it when I called her that, but I was trying to lighten things up.

She just sighed again. “Bye.”

I wondered what Ty wanted.

“What’s up, baby?”

“You gonna spend time with me or on the phone?”

“Sorry. That was my homegirl. We had to catch up. She is like a big sister to me.
